Kiln Dried
THE ART OF KILN DRYING.
The process of kiln drying reduces the amount of moisture in the wood product used to build a log home. In order to minimize shrinkage, warping and twisting, the wood must be conditioned to the moisture content it will assume in the months and years after construction. We use only kiln dried components with an average of less than 19% moisture. All wood products are also graded by certified inspectors in accordance with the Log Home Council grading standards and backed by our Limited Lifetime Warranty. When the logs average less than 19% moisture content, they are ready for the construction of the log home. Your Wild Log Homes advantage extends to our absolute dedication to quality regardless of whether it's our kiln dried logs, handcrafted logs or timber frames.
Moisture Content Matters Here: Wood is unstable when it is green, and will shrink, bow and twist as it dries. The purpose of kiln drying is to eliminate shrinkage and stabilize the wood. However, in the log industry the term "kiln dried" means only that the wood was put in a kiln. It does not specify the moisture content to which the wood is dried. Don't be taken in by some manufacturers who claim "kiln dried" and have a 50-80% moisture content. If the moisture content is higher than 19% then you will have severe problems with your logs.
Wild Log Homes kiln dries the logs at 180 degrees for 30 days or longer until the moisture content is at 19%. It costs more to kiln dry logs but Wild Log Homes believes this is the best investment a log owner can make in our log homes for the following reasons:
1.Kiln dried logs are pre shrunk before final profile, making them stable and uniform compared to unseasoned logs. With the result that no severe shrinking, twisting or warping occurs.
2.Defective logs are graded out by the trained inspector and graded logs are stamped with the log home Council Certification for Stress Grades.
3.Using high heat, the logs are sanitized, killing fungi that cause wood decay, mold, and insects including larvae and eggs.
4.Pitch in the wood is crystallized, reducing the possiblity of this sticky substance seeping to the surface of the log wall.
5.Interior and exterior finishes can be applied immediately following construction, which providing more convienience and immediate protection. The applications absorbs deeper and last longer.
6.More than 10,000 pounds of water are removed from a typical home, significantly reducing the weight of the logs. The results are that even the longest logs are easily handled by two people.
7.Properly dried logs provide higher insulation values, reducing energy costs and increasing the comfort of the log home.
Wild Log Homes is truely unique in Canada as no other supplier in our business uses fully kiln dried logs.
